Fiber optics and its sale in Kouvola
Fiber optic internet in Kouvola has become more common rapidly in recent years. As late as 2021, fiber optic internet was very sparsely available in Kymenlaakso, but now the situation has changed at a rapid pace. Just 5 years ago, fiber optic internet was a dream for many, including myself. The price was also such 5 years ago that it only suited a select few. Now, fiber optic internet is practically becoming cheaper than 5G connections. Especially when comparing transfer speeds, fiber optic internet is clearly more affordable when calculating the actual achieved speed.
In Kouvola, fiber optic sales differ from many other places in Finland. In Kymenlaakso, residents are on average older. Even as a grandfather, far from young, I am on the younger side of owning a detached house. I was among the first to order fiber optic when Valoo started offering it. The affordable price and clear contract terms later brought me to work in the same field and even the same company. Perhaps it would be good to write about that in more detail in a separate blog post.
Older people value ease of use and ensure that the value of their homes is maintained. The more you visit properties, the faster you learn to notice which ones have been well-maintained. Solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and similar technology are becoming very common in homes. Fiber optic internet fits the same idea. It's not just an internet connection, but truly part of a home's modern equipment. Compared to panels, air-source heat pumps, and geothermal heating, the cost of acquiring fiber is only a fraction of that (at least in Valoo's case).
Five years ago, if someone had told me I'd be going door-to-door selling throughout Kymenlaakso (including Kouvola, Kotka, Pyhtää, Hamina, Myllykoski, Anjala, and Inkeroinen), I would have thought they were crazy. Ten years ago, I would have thought moving to Kymenlaakso was crazy. Yet, this crazy person has been enjoying Kouvola for nine years now, and there's no end in sight.
I'm still wondering how this place has managed to stay a secret for so many. Kouvola has affordable housing, sensible commuting areas, and the location is excellent for businesses in many ways. As remote work opportunities improve year by year, it feels strange to see how passively the city has been marketed.
